Roasted Butternut Squash Sandwich, Vermillion, Alexandria, VA

19 Nov

I am crazy about this sandwich! Vermillion menu always seems to take advantage of what is in season. This sandwich is just delicious. The star is the oven roasted butternut squash which is caramelized. Layered with fresh, creamy ricotta, baby arugula and apples as they note on the menu, served 2 ways. Very thinly, sliced, crisp apples and a applesauce/chutney that has a bite of cinnamon and allspice. It is served perfectly on a toasted ciabatta roll. All the flavors are combined perfectly to make this an amazing sandwich. Delicious!  The side of greens with is tossed in a light vinaigrette lets the sandwich shine. If you are in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia doing some holiday shopping, make a stop at Vermillion for lunch and enjoy this sandwich. You will not be disappointed.

Fell in love with this sandwich when I went to New Orleans and ate it at the place that made it famous; The Central Grocery. But when you live in Washington DC and not heading to New Orleans any time soon, you can get the taste of this sandwich by hitting Bayou Bakery in Arlington. The crusty sesame seed italian style bread is stuffed with layers of salami and cappicola ham, cheese and the olive mixture that makes the sandwich. Of course, when you get one, don’t forget the Zapp chips!
